The Incredible Bikini Jam Weekend
Summer prizing came up on a call yesterday morning. Before there were shoes and purses, back when Radio was fun, Rick Thomas was at Z-90 in San Diego and an AE brought to him a pile of giftcards from a woman’s swimwear shop. Realizing that calling these “bikinis” is way better than “$50 towards the purchase of a swimsuit or any item in the store”, so the station did “The Incredible Bikini Jam Weekend”. Only recently has the phone system returned to full service for the SD metro area.
Wild in OKC did this as a Bikini Wax Weekend for the 4th of July. They mixed all weekend and when they played the rip SFX and “We gonna need ‘mo wax!” line from “40 Year-Old Virgin”, that was the cue to call and win swimwear.
White Trash Wednesdays
Lene Moretti at KOB-FM/Albuquerque was the street teamer who came up with one of the best club themes ever; White Trash Wednesdays.
Does this have station social media potential? Oh HELL yeah…as the kids like to say in some parts of the South. Here is Laura Daniels (2nd from left) from Joy-FM in Buffalo getting her #WTW on.
“Or” Morning Show Contests
“(Artist) Or Hallmark Card” has been pretty much run into the ground, so thank you to Jay Kruz with 94.9 in Cincy for adding:
- IKEA Furniture Or Death Metal Band
- Rapper Or Race Horse
- German Beer Or Breed Of Dog
to the list.
Pocket Dialing
A couple of the morning shows have tried this curve. And another one did today. The calls were split between PASSIONATE feelings regarding adultery, and people who thought they knew the couple and were going to call and warn them they were on the radio.
Simple bit:
You’re talking about something, you’re taking calls and VOILE’, one of them is muffled. Low talk in the background. You joke that you’ve just gotten your first official pocket dial and before you move on, suddenly, you can hear them more clearly. As you listen, it’s a guy and a woman discussing each others’ spouses, making sure they pay cash when they check out so it doesn’t end up on a credit card, maybe taking one last look around the room in case they left anything and bang…they’re gone.
You just heard a cheating couple checking out of a hotel room. You post the audio, you open up the phones…they melt. Great bit. All theater. Do it.
