What’s Next?
COVID. TP shortages. Killer hornets. An impending shortage of Dr. Pepper (thank you to Robzilla for the tip on that). Pepperoni shortages. What else could 2020 do to us? Maybe it’s time to bring in a psychic…if you dare.
FOOD FIGHT!!
Since March we (Radio) has done a great job of supporting local businesses.
Social media has done all of our research: if you get on Facebook and ask, “What’s the best place to get a hamburger in town?” you will get a hundred passionate replies. People have strong opinions and allegiances to food. I saw two sales people in Charlotte almost get into a shoving match over best mom and pop barbecue joints.
Entercom in Chattanooga tested the waters with “Best local Mexican restaurants” for Cindo de Mayo. The winning place got some spots and one of the voters got money to spend at the place. For National Ice Cream Day, iHeart in Des Moine did that with “mom and pop ice cream places.”
Y-98 in St. Louis has introduced “Food Fights” and are going genre by genre. They did Burger Battle, BBQ Battle and Deli Rumble. Now…wings.
The 2020 Version Of The Freshman 40
In 2003, KZIA created The Greed Diet which had something like 700 teams losing weight in hopes of splitting a $30,000 pot. It was seismic in its hugeness and they netted the equivalent of the GDP for some nations in rev.
Mojo at iHeart in Detroit has reprised it for lockdown weight gain.
Stressed Out, Exhausted Moms
2020 has taken a toll on people.
One of the PD’s wives posted that she had taken the kids for Back To School shopping and she had never been so thrilled. I think it’s a combination of a return to some sense of normalcy PLUS she gets the house back.
A few years ago Hot 89.9 in Ottawa did Back To School Botox and tightened up a listener who was jubilantly sending her kids off to the bus stop. And the always cool Big 98.7 in Fargo is doing their own spin to it.
Mask Money
There is always going to be a need for blood donations and right now with donations dropping, Live in Portland has incentivized donating AND wearing a mask.
