One of the stations has a client obligation for December that needs to be reworked for COVID and are going to replace it with an on-line version of the Giving Tree, which was a staple for Weinstocks in California for decades.
Working with local agencies they will come up with a dial position number of families who have specific needs. Now, obviously, they’re not going to name the families, ie: “The Nienabers of Scandia have had a really effed up year….” There will be numbered ornaments on the tree.
- You click on an ornament and it will give a brief synopsis of who and what they need: There’s a mother and father and a 7 year-old son. They would like gift cards for food, mom is reentering the workplace so many a clothing gift card, and the boy loves anything about the Minnesota Vikings.
- You click until you find an available ornament/family that you feel capable of supporting or adopting.
- I’ve seen this done a few ways, but basically you’re adopting a family for the holidays. Either the referring agency has a cash total that you can give them and they can buy the stuff, or there are links to buy the stuff, or you buy it and then wrap and deliver to the agency for delivery to the family. I prefer the last one because it’s a little more personal.
Will there be a couple of people who flake or forget or don’t follow through? Yes. Inevitably. In which case you’re ready with the morning show for a “last show before Christmas push” to fulfill these needs.
I’ve also seen this done with families whose needs are more than material, like, someone to come and fix their washer and dryer. One of the GM’s noted that in 2020, this would be a bad idea. Stick to the hard goods.
Hand Sanitizer
One of the Alpha stations is following ‘DJX with the “or the cash equivalent” theme, but with hand sanitizer:
929 JACK FM is doing our part to keep you free and clear of this stupid pandemic. We got this huge shipment of hand sanitizer from China as soon as the pandemic hit. We thought it was a perfect way to quadruple our money. Well… that didn’t work out. So now, we are stuck with these pallets of generic brand hand sanitizer. Our loss is your gain.
Listen to win a thousand bucks worth of generic brand hand sanitizer…. Or the cash equivalent, which is just a thousand bucks. We are really hoping that you take the hand sanitizer.
Actual Radio Drama
Dan Seeman and Joe Bell were telling me about growing up, gathered around the old Philco and listening to FDR’s fireside chats and serials like “Terry And The Pirates” and “Fibber McGee and Molly.” Radio was a place people could go for a variety of entertainment.
Like…”War Of The Worlds”.
The always cool myTalk 107.1 in the Twin Cities has a nine year history of raising insane amounts of money for great local charities in the Twin Cities with something called Project Down And Dirty. The concept is brilliant: the hosts on the station come together and create from scratch, a restaurant. Or a 1980’s era musical.
This year, they’re recreating “War Of The Worlds” on the anniversary of the 1938 broadcast, Friday October 30th.
Again? Brilliant. And we’re heading into a season of iconic films and shows that you could take a stab at, like “It’s A Wonderful Life” and “Rudolph” and “Elf” and “The Grinch”. But probably not “Bad Santa”.
Guess The Dress
Frankie and Jess at 97.1 ZHT in Salt Lake City consistently do more and better stuff than a lot of stations. Kylie with the morning show is getting married and they’re giving the audience the opportunity to guess which dress she chose and also have a shot at a dress of their own.
