The EKG Film Fest
When I was broke and just out of college and working at WLOL in the Twin Cities I shared the upper part of a house in Uptown with two women. We all worked at different stations. Good times. One of them LOVED horror films but they terrified her. She’d be a mess. We were watching the “birthing the alien scene on the bathroom floor” scene from “XTRO” and she was screaming, shoved her wrist at me and was yelling “FEEL MY PULSE!! FEEL MY PULSE!!”
There-in lies some Halloween social media content.
- Find someone on staff who is related to a doctor or nurse.
- Or someone on staff with a family member who has a portable EKG unit. It’s 2020. You can even get them on Amazon.
- Find someone on staff who is similar to Pam, hook them up and have the audience choose five films for them to watch.
- Post a video of the “strip” as it goes haywire.
- Get a million YouTube hits.
Lessons From Sitcoms
If you watch any of the sitcoms that went the distance like Friends or Seinfeld or How I Met Your Mother, one of the common ingredients were some 3rd string characters that would occasionally pop-in. “Janis” on Friends was a one-time appearance who tested through the roof. She became semi-regular.
With Radio, these characters are always best when they’re real. Not the morning guy doing a voice. In SFO it was Verinder who ran a gas station. In Tampa it was Wild Bill who was a P1000 fan of the station. In Miami, it was a manufactured character, Uncle Beasley Reed, the 90 year-old owner of the station. And in San Diego at KSON, it’s John’s neighbor.
These people are usually far more interesting doing traffic or movie reviews or sports picks.
Choose Your Favorite Morning Personality
“Vote For” has always been a great chance for stations to acknowledge and parody the election without getting serious about it. Movin’ in Seattle just launched that with the morning show and there will be plot twists, October surprises, attack attacks and “dirt” from the past.
"You think politics is ugly?" asked MOViN 92.5 Brand Content Director, Cat Thomas. "It's an entirely different kind of election campaign. We have a feeling that this could be worse!"
