The Art Of Promotions
Basically, Promotions is the skill of taking something that everyone has to do, and doing it differently so that people will notice you.
From 1992 to 2000, the EBS test at KQ in the Twin Cities was done by a stoned Bill Clinton at a campaign rally. The info, the material, was done as required. But the delivery? When people call and request your EBS test, get back to me.
Ditto with Katie Fitter at KOB-FM in Albuquerque who would do the traffic every morning “differently.” As much as I loved Haiku Traffic, 8th Grade Gym Coach Traffic was my favorite.
So here are the Dodgers and one of their title sponsors taking a different approach to the first pitch.
The Largest Audience-Participation Virtual Event Of 2020
The annual Clouds For The Cause choir concert at Mall Of America is one of those things that you really need to see to comprehend. Kind of like the Chet Buchanan toy drive at KLUC or Live For 175 at Kiss in Boise.
KS95 championed and helped a local 12th grader record his music before he lost his life to cancer and every year they do a choir concert with 5000 singers in the rotunda at MOA.
This year it will be virtual with choirs and singers being able to contribute pieces that will be edited together. Boom. They saved the event and a huge huge fundraiser for osteosarcoma research. “Clouds Choir®” for a Cause – KS95 94.5
And how often does something that you helped happen get turned into a Disney movie? Dan Seeman was set to play himself but his demand for a trailer as big as Neve Campbell’s got him tossed off the set.
152 Hours Of Bell Ringing
If you stick “World’s Longest” in front of a promotion, and there’s a charity angle, you are 99% assured of getting TV coverage.
Steve Kicklighter at 103.5 Kiss-FM for years did an annual event called Live For 175 where he would stay awake for 175 hours and mix. Or broadcast. It was all about calling attention to child abuse and it’s one of those campaigns like “Stop The Violence” at WPGC where it was bigger than all of their contesting and made the station #1.
“Marathons” are great. Chet’s thing would be lame if he went home every night at 6 pm.
This guy set a record for bell ringing. 151 hours AWAKE ringing a bell for the Salvation Army. Salvation Army Volunteer Sets Bell Ringing Record | NBC News - YouTube
So, get Starbucks as a sponsor, some food clients to feed your person, webcam them and start ringing.
That was easy. (Except for staying awake for 152 hours) Have a donation button and you’re ready to go.
And if you haven’t worked with the Salvation Army, they’re great. They’re gracious. They’ll actually give you totals and they’ll actually be transparent and tell you how they use the money in your community.
