Bill Tanner
Bill passed away on Thursday night and if you ever had the opportunity to sit with him, you instantly realized that he was going to be the smartest person that you would ever meet in Radio.
From Jo Jo Morales - He programmed to fans. It was his emphasis on providing a comfortable listening experience on the whole that rendered programming science used against him as null and void. He also knew that obsessing over ratings manipulation theory would suck the life out of the product. Make your listeners fans and then program to them.
Among my favorite Tannerisms –
- "If you think about it, Family Four Packs kind of suck for people who have more than two kids. Maybe the nice DJ can be the one to tell Tommy that he has to sit in the car while everyone else is inside enjoying the Harlem Globetrotters."
- "Our goal for (calendar year) is to make better mistakes."
- "If everyone is going something, don't do it. Or do it differently."
- "All of the ratings machinations and gimmickry will never ever beat a radio station that has an emotional connection with the audience."
- Brevity is the soul of wit
- “Great morning Radio is the ability to establish yourself and your team as entertaining people with whom the listeners feel comfortable. Predictable unpredictability.”
Support Local Saturday
Another great social media feature from Mix in Cincy where they show that maybe, possibly, Facebook can be more than celeb gossip autoposts. Facebook
Lovers Leap
In 2007 KOOL in Denver did “Toss Your Boss” for Secretaries Day and some employees took their boss up in a plane and pushed her out. My memory is that she swore all the way down and then declared it was the greatest thing ever once she was safely on the ground, and wanted to do it again.
And except for a car give away, parachuting has been sidelined until this past Fall for Back To School when 96.1 NOW-FM tossed a teacher as part of a school supply drive.
And it was Good.
The station is back with another skydiving promotion and on the 14th will take a couple up to 10,000 feet, marry them and have them jump. Take the Lovers Leap! | 96.1 NOW (iheart.com)
Hot Chicks On The Internet
One of the stations has a “thing” that’s being sponsored by the Egg Council. Which reminded me of this little ghetto incubator we had in 4th grade where we watched a chick slowly hatch over a few days. Remembering that ALL great promotions go back to 4th grade, what if, the next time you have a decent grand prize, you get ten qualifiers, assign them each a numbered egg, webcam it and the first egg to hatch wins the prize for the designated listener.
