April 25 to May 1
You only need to be in Radio a couple of years and you can begin to pick up on the flow of the calendar, and see places on the schedule that you can stick something. The first two weeks of November are one such hole. January is a cavern. And the last week of April is a void between Secretaries Day and Earth Day, and the early May onslaught of Cinco de Mayo, followed by Moms and then proms.
Traditional hole fillers have been movies and concert tickets. This might be the week to stick in a bracket contest for the best Mexican food in town.
Or…get people geared up for the summer…(see below)
Swim Where? No, Swimwear.
Very rarely has anyone ever sat down and decided, “I’m going to create an iconic promotion that we need to do and repeat annually.”
Usually you do something and when the dust settles everyone looks at each other and decides, “Yea…that was bigger than I’d thought. Let’s do it again.” The Bachelorette Ball at Wild in SFO was that way. There was no WAY that we ever thought it would get that kind of reaction.
When he was PD at Z-90 in San Diego Rick Thomas found himself with some trade at a bikini place and tossed it on a weekend as The Incredible Bikini Jam Weekend. And it went BOOM.
One of the stations just lined up enough swimsuits to do three summer weekends. They’re going to be giftcards but you’d really want to call them swimsuits.
So, stick this on your wish list Oh and here is a weekend where they tied in mixing and bikini giveaways. Bikini Wax Weekend by cprpromo (soundcloud.com)
The Phrase That Pays
It’s been a year since any station has done a version of The Mystery Man or Fugitive and had people tracking clues to find someone and claim a prize.
Mandy and Jimmy at Hits 106.3 in Lexington did it for St. Patrick’s Day and included a phrase that people needed to know when they ran up to them. You ALWAYS want to have a phrase because usually you’ll have multiple people show up simultaneously and only one will remember what to say. It helps squash any challenges.
