Memorial Day Weekend

You would have to have lived through a Winter in Portland to understand this story.

Memorial Day there is more than just a date. It’s celebration of SUN and the fact that it stopped raining. When I worked at KGON doing call out research, we didn’t do it on the nights between October and March that it didn’t rain: no one would be inside. Seriously. I’m not kidding. And we wouldn’t want to be there either.

So in 2010 on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend I drove past a radio group. All of their vehicles were in the parking lot and there was no sense on the air that this massive transformation of Life was occurring outside their windows. The weekend contest was a Free Ticket Weekend.

It was one of the most disconnected moments I’d ever heard.

Conversely, Mandy & Jimmy at Hits 106.3 in Lexington will be doing their Friday morning show and kicking off “The Best Summer Ever” from a client’s boat on a lake.

Radio is not Rocket Science.

It’s knowing where the listeners are and trying to be there, but more importantly trying to sound like you operate in the same universe as they do.
