Breaking & Lighting
One of the stations that traditionally does Breaking & Entering won’t be this year because the staff is not really keen on going into people’s homes, even if they’re not there. And the Corporate offices concurs.
So what they’re looking at doing is the same concept, but outside:
- They would find a family that is having a particularly rough year with the help of listeners working as conspirators on the project. IE: I tell you about my neighbor Kent and his challenges…
- …and then I create a premise to get him and his wife and kids away in the late afternoon.
- The staff and volunteers and hopefully some clients come in and over the course of two hours light up the house, build a snowman, whatever.
- The conspirator texts when they’re five minutes away.
- The car pulls into the darkened driveway, someone flips a switch and BOOM…you have this lit and decorated house.
- The family starts sobbing.
- You post the video and it gets 50M views in the first day.
- The city steps in and arrests you for not having a permit because this is 2020.
Nine Other Things That You Can Do With Christmas Lights
A “Best Lights” Contest
Lights are to Christmas what costumes are to Halloween. Give people a place to show off their Griswold skills. Asking people to boast about their creations WILL get you a ton of entries.
In Sync
Decorate your studio, even if it’s not in-use and have the lights plugged into a device that will flash them to the beat. Cam it.
My Dog Is Lit
Have people post photos of their dog wrapped in lights. People will most assuredly do it.
Santa Baby
When Y98 in St. Louis asked people to stick Santa hats on their infants and toddlers and send them the pics, they were flooded. Doing it with lights is another angle.
Home Officing
Ask people to share photos of what they’ve done to accessorize their work-from-home space. Delivery food would seem to be a great prize since it’s always been a great incentive for at-work contesting.
Light Tracker
The print media has been doing this since 1927 (a ten year margin of error) where they will map out homes and neighborhoods that annually will go over the top with lights. You should have this on your page and also have listeners add their places and streets to the map. As done by NEWS 1130 in Vancouver. https://www.citynews1130.com/2019/11/25/christmas-lights-events-2019/
The Block That Rocks
One of the things that we’ve seen with COVID is neighbors and their hoods coming together to safely socialize and recreate. What if you did a group prize for the entire street that does the best lighting celebration this year. My sister-in-laws street in little Forest Lake looked like Disneyland last year.
Kiss-mas Lights
When I was working at Kiss 102 we asked listeners to spell out the brand in lights on their home. It doesn’t have to be “Kiss” but some kind of family prize would be enough to get some people to do this.
Unstrung Heroes
Get a giant giant ball of lights and have people guess how long it will take for one of the talent to go from giant giant ball to completely untangled, and plugged in. Closest without going over (ie: 5 minutes and 28 seconds) wins the lights. And who doesn’t like Christmas lights?
