Some ideas from Sandy On The Beach:
Things You Don’t Want Your Mom To See
Buzzfeed has an interesting list to kick this bit off HERE Use it as a launching point to create your own story, in fact I wouldn’t even mention the list, just create a story and share it with your listeners. I am not a women, but I think a ton of women will be able to relate to your story. I have never been a fan of doing a phone topic, just to do a phone topic. Nothing sounds worse than setting up a phoner by saying “Call us with things in your home you don’t want your mom to see” without sharing your story first. Always remember, “Never let the truth get in the way of a good story” This is radio, tell a great story, make it interesting, make it big even if never happened. If what you are doing is interesting or the audience can relate, they will call. If they don’t, you shared a great story and move on.
Should Moms With Crying Babies Be Banned From Coffee Shops?
Read the entire story and see the video HERE This happened in the UK and chances are 99.9% of your listeners will not see the story. So set up your own caller that has the same thoughts as this women. Every now and then you have to “Shake” your audience up a little, you have to grab their attention and give them a platform to express themselves. This is a topic that will surely do that. You are most likely to get calls from moms that will hate this women, try to mix in a call with moms that agree with her. You have to stir the pot! This is the type of thing people will go in to work talking about, chances are they won’t go in to work and say, “Did you hear that Bruno Mars song the morning show today?”
Tween Dating:
I saw this article about why parents shouldn’t freak out when their tween announces they have a boyfriend or girlfriend. I have an 8 year old, so we are still in the “boys are dumb” stage My take away from the article was tween relationships don’t last long. It would be fun to find a tween that has a boyfriend or girlfriend and check in with them every week. Ask them what they and their boyfriend/girlfriend do. Do they go on dates, do they hang out after school, did they swap valentine gifts? This is the type of bit that you can work ahead on and get in the can. If the article is accurate, the bit probably won't last long and you end up with an ending that makes sense.
Cash Or Dash
One of the best car contests of the past couple of years was Newcap’s “Gone In Sixty Seconds” which is pretty much the way it sounds.
- You register your name and where you are weekdays during certain periods of the day.
- You listen for your name.
- If you hear it, you run as quickly as you possibly can outside and tag the giveaway car that has crept up and is idling. If you get out there and slap the car before it speeds away after a minute, you’re entered in the draw for the car.
The cash version of that would be to have a DJ standing outside, next to a running van, with a $100 bill in his/her hand. The listener has a set amount of time to hear their name, dash and grab.
Youtube Phenoms
The beauty of having teenagers is that they’ve stumbled on web stuff that most people in Radio will miss because we’re not that savvy or not into that genre of Youtube artist or performer. But we’re slowly catching up.
Before she went on to a show on Nickalodean , Andrea Russett was a 17 y/o baby DJ in Ft. Wayne….with 300,000 Youtube followers and about 36 million clicks. There are stations with a cume of a million who don’t have 10% of that.
Before she was the #1 Night Show in DC, Elizabethany was a video blogger at the University of Maryland.
Zach Sang? Same thing.
Look at this stuff as Show Prep/Idea Starters. If two teens in Seattle can get 200 million views with silly cooking challenges, don’t you think that maybe just possibly they may have stumbled on the seed of a concept that you could take and mold for your market and show? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BWsAssx4mg
Look at the clicks she gets and then look at the numbers people get when they try to copy her. Point? Come up with your own unique hook. Drinking? Good. Cooking? Good. Now you need one more element that she doesn’t. Blindfolded? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zp845bMOl_c
Tyler Oakley does a LOT of straight-to-morning show pranks and games. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRzfgI3cdJk
Amazing Phil does a lot of topics and answering viewers questions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3g2LWtgcuo
Shane Dawson is great and how is this not a one-and-out morning show bit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHvY_jhbRSs
Sexy Friday. Coming to a morning show somewhere, soon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLH10XkHkWs
Yes, a helium voice will generate 66,000,000 views. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEqwKNNQBwc
A C Company VP made a serious run at hiring Jenna Marbles only to learn that she basically makes more money than him, for posting vids to Youtube. That’s a sobering thought. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9w34lfMZefA
