2/3’s of the best contest methodologies in Radio came out of Power 96 in Miami. And the ONE contest that most destroyed the phone system was Cash Blast. It was presented as the world’s easiest contest: “We’re opening up the phones for 20 minutes and if you get through and we answer, you win $96.” After every song in that 20 minute period, the announcer would read off some more names that he’d taken. It sounded…huge.

KAJA in San Antonio had 900 tickets to a George Strait stadium show and announced the times for ticket blast on social media.

And next week, a station will be doing it with $50 gas cards.

As a methodology, “blast” is great and could be done with anything. You can overthink prizes. Any kind of summer ticket or even food items would work. It’s all in the presentation and the imaging of taking a hundred winners. Ask me and I’ll walk you through it.

I think with so many people working from home, it actually helped the response time.

With upcoming “events” like his death, first, immediately go and look at what they’re doing at stations in the UK and Australia. Because they probably aren’t using the same images that 90% of US stations are using. And that would be good. JACK in Vancouver had some good stuff.

Timing is of the essence. Alpha in Columbia has a great team and were able to quickly get a local tribute up and share some stuff from the Alanis era of his career.

So, there are a couple of things you can do and just stick in a file and be ready to hit immediately.

Candles are always an image that goes with this. If you can find an image like this (without “Shutterstock” written all over it), boom. Make that the background for your site, if you can. Or stick a message on it and make it the social media cover photo or profile pic.

The other things that people will do is go and leave tributes on a wall of fence. Great.
