NKOTB
There’s an “I Love The 90’s” tour with Tone Loc, Young MC, Color Me Badd and “more” and then there’s an NKOTB tour with Rick Astley, En Vogue and Salt ‘N Pepa.
These are REALLY good tickets for a lot of stations. The themes, the nostalgia, there’s so much you can bury yourself in with it. I’d really have fun with it and not just do an “enter your email thing.”
For instance, Rick Roll To The Show. Basically a version of the On Hold Game which was the only contest of mine that Judy Ellis didn’t think sucked. You’d take a caller, stick them on-hold and they have to repeat the hook over and over for 20 or 30 minutes. Pop them up between songs and spots and eventually give them a reprieve and the tickets.
With NKOTB Sunny in San Diego did Block Parties. They’d lob out a hot zip and the caller had to be from there and show their ID when they came to get their tickets.
Hot in Ottawa did Shock For The Block: they took aa caller and a member of the morning show was asked a musical question. If they got it right, the caller got the tickets. If they got it wrong, they got an electrical shock and the caller got nothing.
Again, so many themes to play with Laura Daniels had people share what their first celebrity poster ever was. What Was The First Celebrity Poster You Hung In Your Room? [AUDIO] (961thebreeze.com)
And it’s hair and fashion. So any version of Big Hair For Bon Jovi would kill. G-105 in Raleigh got 700 entries of bad 80’s perms for Bon Jovi tickets. 1989 teenage girls New Kids On The Block fans at a concert - YouTube
They were kind of little mimbos. If you could find a girl from 1989…and stick her in the front row with a “Hi Donnie, remember me from The Registry in June ’89?” banner, it would be funny
These were night’s out for the fans. Allyson and Lisa at ‘DVD in Detroit recreated that for NKOTB and took some women in a limo and then to a hotel suite for a pajama party. That’s kinda cool.
Backstage Thievery
Concerts are back and based on social media, a bunch of you spent the weekend at these events.
The best morning after contest was done by one of the CHR morning shows. Backstage he got Jessica Simpson to burb in an empty pop bottle, he sealed it and gave it away.
Mix in KC once gave away the toilet seat from Jesse McCartney’s dressing room. Phones exploded.
And the best was Jo Jo Wright who, while exiting the bowels of the Charlotte Coliseum, popped into a production room and grabbed am empty grease stained pizza box. He gave it away the next night at “Little Joe’s pizza box.” Phone service in the southeast Atlantic states never quite recovered.
So, again, as exciting as posting a photo with an artist might be for all the people who didn’t get to meet them, test the theft waters and see what happens. “Backstage Raiders.”
Summer Movies & Trailers
The greatest launch of a talent was at Hot in Norfolk with Elizabethany in 2011. They created a movie trailer. It was unbelievable. And sadly the link is gone. So here she is talking about how her life sucks.
If you’re going to theme your summer, why NOT do a movie trailer? And again, in Norfolk they had all the elements you’d see in a theater.
Movies in movie THEATERS are back. There is a certain group and age of people where a TV or phone will never recapture the experience of being in a theater. And on Sunday I went to my first cinenaplex film since February of 2020. I asked the guy who was working and he said that they’re thinking this is going to be a big big summer.
One of the things that Radio has always done exceptionally well…until we stopped…was making the most of those “seasonal blockbusters”. You don’t need a full theater. Five pairs of tickets to “Maverick” and the morning show will have a ball for a week.
And it’s like NKOTB: there is SO much you can do. ID the clip. 5 Word Reviews. Impersonations. Post old stubs. So call a mom and pop theater and ask if they’’ll do gift cards for mentions.
You’ve got “Maverick”, “Jurassic World; Dominion”, “Elvis”, “Lightyear” and “Thor” to name a few.
Movies are the Entertainment Universal and tickets are GREAT prizes.
