Buffalo

When things occur like the murders last weekend in Buffalo, it’s really hard to know HOW to react and what you should do “Too much” can be offensive and people could see it as you trying to get some mileage out of a tragedy. And they would be correct. “Too little” can be equally bad. With the shootings at Sandy Hook, there was a station in Hartford that just plowed ahead with 72 hours of meaningless social media posts before someone actually commented, “What is wrong with your people?”

We have a three-pronged strategy to deal with the weekend’s tragedy

1)Healing (messages from local thought leaders)

2) Donations and volunteers (Live broadcast on Friday from the main donation and packing center)

3) Crisis Services (PSA’s and promos)

Feedmore WNY is doing the bulk of the work helping the community. Their biggest need is staffing volunteers. They will need close to 60 individuals a day to help with food distribution. Right now they are overwhelmed with food donations, but they worry it will slow over time. We will broadcast live on Friday from the donation center to encourage donations on Friday or on Saturday when people have more free time. We will have interviews with organizers, civic leaders and volunteers throughout the day to encourage people to donate food, money or time.

Morning show will continue to carry the topics and tough conversations on gun violence and racism. As I mentioned, all the major players in the community have been on the show already. We are still hopeful to have the Governor on sometime this week.

First/Last

With concerts, you want to be the first thing people see as they arrive and the last thing they see when they head home. Highway message boards are great. Hit them with a message as they’re exiting the freeway five blocks away, flip it around and thank them as they head home.

Concert Stickers

Stations like KUBE have done branded stickers specific to concerts that came to Seattle. Ryan Maple shares an example from KNIX in Phoenix. He said that it really became a “thing” for listeners to collect and display as many as they could.

To paraphrase Ferris Bueller, “If you have the means, I highly recommend that you do some of these.
