Kentucky Floods
Rick Thomas was the first PD for Wild in SFO and when the LA Earthquake happened, he taught me the term tangible. The GM wanted to give out the phone number for the Red Cross. Rick said “It’s not tangible. You can’t touch it. You don’t see it. You don’t know where it goes. In fact, where would it go?” And the GM said, “Uh, they won’t share that.”
So Rick’s promo person made ONE PHONE CALL and six hours after the quake United Airlines had committed a (free) 737 for two RT’s from SFO to LAX where Power 106 had vehicles to help get bottled water to Northridge where people were living in parks. Three hours at a Target and they got all the water they needed.
Water is tangible and hundreds of stations have driven water thousands of miles to disaster zones.
Diapers are tangible. Hubbard in the Twin Cities has driven ¾’s of a million diapers to hurricane zones in the last few years.
Pet supplies are tangible. ‘ROR in Boston drove that down to Tampa after a hurricane.
So, Alpha in Louisville knocked it out of the park yesterday. They tied in with an existing campign.
Stations have big voices and platforms. These people SHOULD be using you to support their drives.
From Casey Wrins at Alpha in Louisville --------------------------------
What a success today was! Very sweaty, but so much fun. Ben did some live broadcasting from the event & got an interview with the Mayor (& he posted us on his twitter)! The mayor's office was so happy that we came by and were so giddy when they heard it coming live from the radio (We had station music blasting all day). They were also so thankful that we were there sponsoring, helping and promoting the event all day & want to use us in the future!
Alpha Media had a great turnout with almost the entire staff out there helping throughout the day. We filled 2 box trucks, 1 cargo van, & half a dozen pickup trucks worth of general hygiene items for the Whitesburg Medical Clinic, located in Whitesburg, Ky.
It was a great day- This is what radio is all about. The city of Louisville really pulled through & I was so blessed to be a part of it. Not that I wish for another disaster to happen; but knowing the rock solid team we have here at Alpha Media & the AMAZING people over at the Louisville Metro, the Mayor's office- there is no doubt in my mind that we can & will do this again. Today showed me just how great my job is & how people will always come together to do what is right.
