Beat The Bear

“Beat The Bomb” was a contest that Bill Tanner created at Power 96 in Miami and it became synonymous with the brand. Like French Fries and McDonalds. Basically you take a caller, there is a ticking or “hissing fuse” sound as a pre-recorded voice read off dollar amounts; $10, $20, $50, $70….” and you stuck with it as long as you felt lucky…or until the bomb exploded.

There are lots of things you can beat. Gas pumps. At Xtreme in Honolulu, it was money being downloaded/hacked from a bank. One of the Country stations did “Beat The Brat” with a bratwurst in a microwave. You needed to get out before it exploded.

This might be the best contest of 2022 (so far). Jay Styles at Movin’ 92.5 in Seattle takes a caller and they have 20 seconds to name 10 items in a category that Jay gives them…or the bear will catch them.

It’s very similar to….

The Uh Game

You take a caller, give them a topic like “ice cream” and they have to talk about it for 20 seconds without repeating themselves or saying “uh”.

A Tik Tok Booth

When he was at Power 96, Gino Reyes was the best “event person” in the Beasley group. He made all of his own gadgets and props and photo set ups (for pennies), so, of course, he was the first person that the new owners popped.

He made this.

In 2022 all you need to give people is a place or opportunity for a photo that they can share. This is that but next level. His number is 786-295-1727.

And there ARE Tik Tok booths around. Just not many. Ask anyone who does stuff like wedding photography because they have lots of that kind of equipment for their events. Or make your own. And rent it out.
