High School Takeovers
When Dan Mason Jr. finally arrived in Boston to become PD at AMP in Boston, they had been jockless for two months and his description of their sound cannot be reprinted but take “paint drying” and multiply by 1000. We conferred and he started having the night show done by a different high school cheerleading squad every night. The whole shift. And…we pinged some meters because when you do these things, you WILL get every human in the school listening.
“Christmas Shoes”
If there was ever a song that makes you want to plunge knitting needles into your ears, many people would say this is it.
One of the oldest fundraising bits on the planet is to find an annoying song and play it repeatedly until you hit some goal. In Charlotte and Wichita, they needed $10,000 quickly for some charity and played Four Non-Blondes and “Achy Breaky Heart” over and over until the phone pledges hit their goal. They hit their goals in hours.
At Jamz in Albany, it was 10,000 toys and it was Mariah Carey’s Christmas song.
Thinking outside of begging for cash during the holidays, how about new or in-good-shape used boots for low income families. I would gladly give up my daughters’ footwear on a sub zero day to get this song off the radio.
Remotes In December
It’s assumed that you will have a couple.
One of the stations has a mobile client that wants the incredibly vague “something” but with a chartable angle that doesn’t include collecting toys.
This is the time of year you will often find offices or businesses trying to raise money for some charity that they’re involved with. What if…you invited groups of at-work listeners to your client for a free breakfast at 9 am, and then send them out with lists of items/things/themes they need to shoot in a mobile scavenger hunt.
Specific things like, “A photo of your group in front of NBC Channel 6 holding a sign that says ‘We love (station).”
The first team back with all 20 items correctly judged to meet all the criteria, gets $1000 for their cause.
Follow it up with all the teams at a place like Applebees. My bud Michele just did this with a group of people all over Orange County, followed by massive wine and food.
