Blizzards
When Minnesotans are freaking out, you know it’s going to be bad. I’ve always looked at blizzards as one of the great opportunities to connect and engage. If you’re in the path and can unplug from syndicated and VT’ed programming, do. Live people talking/engaging with live listeners will always win.
We were the first social media so we should be the place where people share their stories and pics.
If you can unplug from autoposts, do. This is a s mutually shared experience with everyone in your market. No one is excluded. If you can get people down to the station with some beer and food and sleeping bags, you’re going to beat the other stations that will not even acknowledge that this is happening.
I used to love to be the Blizzard Guy for Emmis in Minny and wrote something about it. If someone can recall what you were doing on the air 25 years later, that’s a win.
Final Forceps
If you haven’t done a Baby Idol gallery contest recently, maybe late March is the time to bring it back.
March Baldness
Having listeners write your moniker on their dome and submit the photo to try and win prizes is what differentiates Radio from all of the boring mediums.
B-96 in Chicago did March Abness with photos of listeners who had shed the holiday weight, and KUBE in Seattle did March Music Madness with 64 songs in a bracket. Random voters got selected for giftcards to the sponsoring client.
