Never Before Friday
Long before there were bucket lists Kate McGwire at WOW Country in Boise would do Kate University and once a month go out and do something that she’d never done before, like, say, celebrating a birthday at Chuckee Cheese. But with a group of listeners who had also never experienced the thrill of having a giant rat serve you pizza. KU even had its own crest.
This could be done monthly as a Never Before Friday. Orlando Davis has never before seen “The Exorcist” so he’s getting a copy from Red Box and watching it in the conference room. If you haven’t seen it, now would be the time to do it. And even if you have, in fact, gone to McDonalds, there will be listeners who haven’t, so it’s a good premise for some Hang (Out) Time.
Treasure Hunts vs. Scavenger Hunts
With at least three stations in every market doing basically the same contest, it’s always nice to be reminded that there are some other things to do when you have the opportunities.
Scavenger Hunts are giving out a list of 10 or 20 items and having a grand prize for someone who finds them all.
This doesn’t have to be a big cash prize like at 97 Rock in Buffalo or Wired in Philly when they did $10,000
Jamz in Orlando did a 10 or 15 item hunt every year when they had a good ticket like the NBA All-Star Game. Mix in Buffalo just did a small one for concert tickets.
You can do mobile scavenger hunts at events like State Fairs, like Q in Syracuse has done at the New York State Fair.
Or do a Selfie Scavenger Hunt like Toyota did in the Bay Area and look for their brands all over town, snap and share.
Treasure Hunts are when you hide an item and there’s a hunt to find it.
The St. Paul Winter Carnival has done a medallion hunt every year since 1952 and this is as much of a part of the DNA of the market as lutefisk is. A daily clue is placed in the paper and generations of families have searched for it.
The Fugitive is just a treasure hunt but with a person you search for.
WiLD in Tampa did a virtual one: no digging or having to do anything other than track the clues and call and guess where the tickets to the Superbowl had been misplaced (in the satellite dish at the NBC affiliate)
Follow The Bieber was clues as in directions (leave the radio station and go west 1.3 miles….) that led to a medallion that was worth an artist experience
Power in Miami, Hot in Ottawa, Jammin’ in New London, Jamz in Greensboro and Kiss in Dallas have lost a letter or digit and you had to find it were it was hidden in the market.
Power in El Paso lost Mariah Carey’s bra. Find it and fly on her private jet with her to see her on Oprah.
And iHeart in Auburn has turned theirs into a money maker. Cost to the cluster is ZERO and last year’s prize was worth over $16,000.
