The Misstake Show
There was a Drew Carey episode where they purposely botched numerous lines, props and even the credits. The contest was to count all the errors. Q-107.5 in Memphis borrowed the concept and did a whole morning show that was riddled with more screwups then normal. Even for them. Again, the audience counted and e-mailed in the total to win a prize.
More On Plowing The Listeners
From Boatman at WMOM-FM in Ludington, Michigan: I was involved with a promotion that gave the Radio Station "Street Cred" literally. As a former snow plow driver, I was aware of the high T.S.L. by guys in trucks clearing roads, driveways, and shopping mall parking lots of the white stuff. And with that in mind I approached it with the knowledge it would be gratefully accepted by the target demographic. A local eatery sponsored it. Here's how it works from 9a-11a Busters Breakfast buffet is only a dollar for snowplowers in appreciation of the fine work they do, every plower gets a coupon for a dollar buffet. Broadcast live from the buffet giveaway refills of coffee with a station mug.
Impopster
One of the Prod people threw an idea at me. Kind of a spin on something that me and the interns did one time when we had access to a limo for a day; we took one of the guys and turned him into a Rock Star. The biggest interns wore suits and were his bodyguards. Said he was the guitarist for whatever hot one-hit-wonder we were playing. (One of those bands where you don't know any of the members). We took him to bars, restaurants and more then twice had to intervene and keep him from getting laid.
Things have changed since 1987. (But my hair remains the same) There are 1000 HUGE celebs who I have no idea or care-less who they are. Eva Mendes. Kimberly Stewart. Any of the cast from "Highschool Musical". And 997 others. AJ's idea was to take a winner, send him/her to a medium-sized market (to insure there's impact), get their hair done, buy them some clothes, have paparazzi follow them, get them a limo with a HUGE no-necked bodyguard in a suit, and send them around to live like a Pop Star for a weekend. Create a fake name and make them part of a hot show as the new addition to the cast.
Pick the market based on having a sister-station there to coordinate and help work out the local details. Maybe even have the morning show talk about how Matty Tell from "The Hills" is in town to visit relatives. Get it all on video and make them a youtube star.
