Conflict & Buzz
The scariest thing I heard in 2002 was from my friend Jeff from summercamp: "I don't need to listen to Radio now that I have my iPod." (Irony: he WON it at a station-sponsored holiday event)
Scariest thing heard at the Nienaber Christmas 2009, from my oldest sib who is a journalist: "I can't remember the last time any station in Kansas City did anything that anyone talked about. Why did Radio stop doing fun stuff?"
I explained PPM to him.
"Oh. So why did Radio stop doing fun stuff?"
The motion picture industry is a marginally successful enterprise that brings in well over $1,000,000 a year. And they're not afraid to do completely out of left field stunts to get people to talk about and spread the word about their product.
As exemplified by two staged fights with Michael Cera, who I'm sure, is actually a very nice guy. In fact, that's why these worked. Again, staged. (Probably NSFW at high volume)

Conflict is interesting. Two of the biggest bits in the history of PXY in Rochester and Wild in OKC was when their female cohosts walked out after stupidity by their male counter-parts. (Ripped right from the Encyclopedia Of Sitcom Cliches)
Morning show promos are basically movie trailers and every one sounds exactly the same. "Hey, this is Tyler from Nutz In The Morning and if you missed us..."...............whoops. Sorry. Fell asleep for a second. To have your morning promo:
- Done in sign language
- Outsourced to India
- Done by an Anger Management class dropout
- Done in Haiku
whatever, would stand out.
Imagine being in a movie theater and sitting through trailer, trailer, trailer, trailer and then THIS showed. This would be the one you'd remember.

I've known my wife for 22 years. Never in 22 years has she asked me about a TV commercial. And today she did...about the Domino's spot that bashes their own product.
THAT is a great promotion. (Granted, it's a small fledgling company with a narrow target base so they can afford to take risks.)
