Q: Why would a business or company use a stunt on April Fools?
A: To get "talk" and viral marketing for their product

The City of Ely, Minnesota is a big resort community. And they run some of the most creative ad campaigns on Radio that this industry has ever seen. Today? Dairy Queen bought the Boundary Waters Canoe Area of northern Minnesota. At least according to the spots that ran on all the stations in Minneapolis. I got un-solicited emails from non-Radio friends AND...better then that? I just walked into the post office in Scandia and there was a group discussion with about a dozen people about it.

Q: Why do radio stations use a stunt on April Fools?
A: The same reason people like Ely do.

Hot 107.1 in Denver was bought by Lady Gaga which dovetailed into hourly give aways of her tickets. I'm not familiarwith her but supposedly the phones were good.

New Smoking Fines

Kiss in Oklahoma City learned that smokers have no sense of humor about impinging on their rights when they announced that on red flag (fire danger) days, there will be a $75 fine for smoking...inside OR outside.

Happens EVERY Time

You prank someone, they fall for it, and then they go and try to fool all THEIR friends. A letter to WOW Country in Boise:

okay so I totally just fell for your terrible April fools Scam...I was in the shower listening to the radio when I heard a serious voice come onto the radio, and it made me think how can they force you to get a physical, have blood tests and even give bone marrow...I was intrigued by the seriousness of this voice but didn't think a whole lot about it, I texted my husband at work and asked him do we have to go get a physical for the stupid new health care laws, and he replied I don't know. So then I was like okay, since he hadn't heard anything about it, oh well if I get into trouble whatever, then I head the announcement AGAIN on the radio when I happened to be on the internet so I gave the website a shot to see what this was all about, and it said exactly what the radio announcement had said, then I clicked on to see what I need to do, knowing I would not be giving my social security # out to a random website, I just wanted to see what was required.....HAHAHA best April fools, you totally got me!

Used the dummy web page and took the angle on-air of "Tea Party/Live Free or Die/Less Government Intervention angle on air to breathe current, topical life into this old prank.

Needless to say, I need to get a Cap Ex report in to corporate to buy our studio a new phone. It melted today!

Back to work and then it dawned on me that I need to change my calendar today. So there I am, flipping March to April when it dawned on me. Today is April 1st and that means April Fools Day. I laughed so hard I nearly choked. A few papers will have to be reprinted and my monitor wiped off, but no permanent harm.

That was one of the best, if not thee best, April Fools jokes I have ever heard. My hats off to you my friend. Have a great day :-)
