A Night With The Schmucks
My criteria for what elements generally are in a "great" promotion are:
- It includes "quality time" with the airstaff
- It's "entertainment" related. Music. Movies. Sports.
- It evokes emotion
- It's topical
- It has a tease or lead up to it
- It's a Mall Idea, ie: you could come back to the market in ten years, walk up to a random person at a mall and have them recall it.
My list of favorite things? Torturing talent by making them spend time with listeners. (Which is why I like bus trips)
If you have some ROE's, what about qualifying everyone for a night out with the morning show in a limo. Dinner. Some local event (not a movie). Hitting whatever inevitable club gig the station has.
We lose sight of the fact that for the average listener:
- Going out with the morning show is MASSIVE
- Except for their wedding night, this will probably be the only night they'll ever be in a limo.
A version of this is being done at KLUC in Las Vegas...with a very cool video and with an even cooler pay off. http://kluc.radio.com/2010/07/01/weekend-with-a-schmuck/#more-15246
Soldiers Angels
Who'd have thought when we were doing "Support The Troops" promotions in 2003 that it'd still be going on? Mike McNamara from Leighton in Grand Forks deployed last month. They've tied yellow ribbons around the trees in front of the station, will be connecting with him regularly from Afghanistan on the air, and will be sending packages and supporting his family through Soldiers Angels. This is such a great feel-good charity. Do it http://www.soldiersangels.org/
