Breast Cancer Awareness Month
It's in three days. And regardless of format, this is a charity/cause that touches everyone. (One of the CHR PD's, a couple of years ago arched his eyebrows and said, and I quote, "My listeners are 18-34 year-old women. This is not a big cause for them. It's not even on their radar until they hit their late 30's." Dude was a Mensa candidate. I was going to bring up that they probably had moms or sisters...but it would have been lost on him. He also said that his listeners didn't go to Las Vegas and drink, dance and gamble.)
"Bras Across..." came up at a Z-90/San Diego brainstorming session in '93. The idea was to collect and string them across a bridge. Never happened at Z-90 but it's THE Breast Cancer promotion for Radio in 2009.
Q-102 in Cincy did a great one last year. Hot in DC strung them across the Mall. Cities 97 in Minneapolis/St. Paul did them across the Stillwater bridge to Wisconsin.
First, reach out to Susan G. Komen and offer to help with whatever plans they have in October.
After that...
Sack Breast Cancer
One of the stations has a grocery store that wants "something" they can do to be a part of the cause. First, charity bagging is good. To get a different highschool football team, in jerseys, at a store on a Saturday, bagging for tips, would be "Help Sack Breast Cancer". Or spend an evening with food dye and dye bread, fruits and vegetables pink. Do a Pink Food Sale.
Bra Ha Ha
One of the Max Media stations in Norfolk did this. Decorate and submit your bras for an exhibit.
Titty Twitter
Find a woman who is fighting it and have her chronicle her story through daily posts. Could also be a fundraiser, ie: cash per Tweet.
Bald For The Cause
There are a handful of Press Universals that, if you do them, you almost always get covered. At least a few times a year you'll see some school principal getting his head shaved because all his kids hit their reading goals. Corinna at Jamz in Phoenix raised $50,000 for Breast Cancer Research last year when she shaved her noggin. Press coverage? All three affiliates.
Little Pink Dress Party
As done by Hot 99.5 in DC last year as the after-party to their Bra Bit. Also done as "Bosom Ball" by WKRQ. I had to talk Patti Marshall out of Knockerpalooza and Wango Ta Ta Tango.
Pennies From Heaven
Q in Cincy added $6000 to their Bras total with a contest that awarded a noon-time show to the school that donated the most pennies.
bBay
Get signed bras from artists and local celebrities and have them for sale on the station website.
Painting The Town Pink
Go and pour pink dye in all of the fountains overnight.
Mommagrams
Do a mid-day luncheon for women and their moms to come, get scanned and enjoy a nice meal together.
One Small Squeeze For Mankind
Katie Couric got scoped. You have a lot of the public who are still nervous about or uninformed about the procedure. Have one of the female talent go, get it done and chronicled on video.
The Change Bra-gade
KDWB in Minny and KZIA in Cedar Rapids raised thousands and thousands of dollars for tornado relief with The Penny Pickup. Rocket science kinda stuff: they drove a pickup around and people threw in their spare change. This would have DJ's and street teamers on corners with bras. Fill the cups.
Pink History Month
Could be as simple as some pre-recorded or web info on the disease, symptoms, preventative measures and strides that have been made in combating it.
Again, this is a great cause. Everyone knows someone who knows someone...and if you're a CHR? These are your listeners who are going to deal with it.
