You Can't Beat Stations That Do This Stuff
The Bieber flick debuts on 2/11. If you're connected emotionally with the audience, you're Gold. All the ratings gimmickry in the world can't beat that. From Keke at Kiss in Boise:
Just an update: On the Justin Bieber front - I have a date with an 8 year old girl who is dying and been all over the news in the Valley. She called up and asked me to dinner and I asked her to the Bieber movie. She said she would check her Bieber calendar :( So, I'm gonna deck out a limo in Bieber fashion and invite other kids. We're gonna get another limo and load up the moms.
I will take the Bieber Fever limo for pizza and movies and Michelle will take the women to shop and dinner.
This is all tentative, but heading 100% in the that direction. For PD Bieber haters, have the moms call in to win. Then you have kids and moms listening non-stop. We'll use Facebook, Web, text and e-blast to spread word and give people 2nd chances to win.
The Sounds Of Snow
I went to San Diego last month and did a 45 minutes exercise with a room of CBS programmers on how to react quickly and decisively to "stuff" happening. Shootings. Earthquakes. Blizzards. Celebrity stupidity. Tragedies. Triumphs. The stuff that, sadly, most stations miss these days. I referred to Y-94 in Fargo's calling an audible on New Years Eve, relocating all their resources to the station and doing the best NYE's 'cast I've ever heard. Why? Because it sounded like Fargo in a blizzard. It was amazing Radio.
The South got socked with snow around the same time I was in San Diego. Mix in Dothan used the station vehicle to deliver wood to people who were freezing in their homes. R1 in Richmond did a Cabin Fever Meltdown mix of babymaking music and followed it with a Snow Blows mix. The River in St. Louis got some listener submitted snow pics on the website and changed the music in the Retro 3X3 to weather music like "Informer" by Snow and Ice Ice Baby.
You can't beat stations that are relevant.
The Sounds Of Summer
Just as Y-94 in Fargo sounded like New Years Eve IN Fargo, I've occasionally heard stations that sounded like their markets in the summer. (Which you generally DON'T have occur when you're stuck in a studio)
- Wired/Philly's nude beach broadcast
- KDWB, Kiss in Charlotte, KSFM...basically any station with a boat patrol
- WPGC in DC when they used to have a remote studio in Georgetown
- Jo Jo Wright doing Friday Night Live in the summer in San Francisco
- Strawberry's roof parties in the summer
And any of the stations that have done beach or lake houses.
The best promotion in the History Of Radio, I would argue, was Xtreme Radio's Beach House in Honolulu for the Summer of '99. The Beat in Austin did this. Power 96 has done this. And you can make a ridiculous amount of money with it.
A station to remain nameless has this set and sold and ready for Memorial Day. I have some old info and sales pieces from a previous incarnation of you'd like to see them.
Or, you could do remotes at Rally's with a prize wheel. Those are cool too.
