So Simple It's Embarrassing We Miss It
On a semi-regular the local news in Minneapolis will show some Guard or Reserve unit coming home at the hanger at MSP. Sobbing family. The Governor. Applause. At DFW, returning charters roll under a cascade of water from airport firetrucks and American Airlines employees crowd around the gates and hand out flags and bring the concourse to a stop as everyone cheers.
The USS Toledo returned to Groton from deployment last month and Brian and Miss L on Jammin' 107.7 three times made note of that and sent out wishes to the sailors and their families. Now, granted, in a PPM world I don't see the value of spending a combined 30-40 seconds over the course of a three hour show acknowledging people that no one cares about when we should be working to strengthen our music position, but that's just me.
Sierra Mist
Got requested from one the CHR's yesterday for April - May promotions. A couple of things that they might not have seen submitted?
Sierra Mystical People LOVE psychics. Period. They'll usually say "I don't believe in that crap" but will be the first to stand in line at your tent in 100 degree heat to talk to the morning show psychic who dropped by your summer concert. (Boise Music Fest last Summer. Poor woman ended up sitting there and answering questions for hours.) Have a psychic come to all of your remotes for a month, sponsored by the client who would also be there pouring and sampling.
Sierra Kum Laude Newspapers have been running grad announcements and well wishes for 100 years. Only a couple of stations have been smart enough to have a scroll on the website of listener messages, ie: "Congraduations Dave for finishing your GED, Mom and your New Dad!" Easily sponsorable by the client. Not that any of you care about juicing web traffic.
Off The Grid
One of the Marketing Directors reached out to me. He's got a station that sponsors MAYBE the biggest summer music event in town. They're trying to continually add new sponsors and elements that won't require staffing because they're always stretched thin.
What if one of the AE's could find a solar client who could set up an array of panels so that the broadcast portion of whatever Jam, Bash or other signature event you do every summer, was completely green? THAT would be something you could tout and is a nice hook to the way you promote it.
