The Art Of Promotions
Promotions is simply the act of getting people to notice and later recall you.
- Rarely has anyone ever gone into work and said, "Gee Don, there was this radio station billboard and they had their music position and three photos of artists!!!"
- Rarely has anyone ever gone to pick their kid up at Brownies and said, "Gee Deb, this radio station Facebooked me a message about their club gig tomorrow!!!!"
- Rarely has anyone ever gone to a conference and been able recall a session from 7 years earlier.
But
- People still talk about Dave Ryan's Ugly Kids boards
- I have people cut and paste and forward stuff from the Jack In The Box FB page all the time
- I did a session at Morning Show Bootcamp in 2004 that someone last week, verbatim recalled.
Why? Because as opposed to the people with power points or who stood behind a podium, I got out, walked the room and pulled an "attendee" out of the audience, had her strip to her underwear and used her as the blackboard for taking notes.
THAT is Promotions.

The Fast Food Flyaway
I lobbed this out a few weeks ago and it got a TON of interest. And Fly 92 in Albany just launched it a couple of weeks ago. www.fly92.com
The way I did it in 1992 was simple. Everyone who won on the air got, wait for it, five dollars in Burger King food!!! And they qualified for, wait for it, dinner for two (up to a $10 value) at Burger King. (The promo had a tag from Legal about using a small drink cup and returning for unpaid-for refills as making you uneligible for future contests).
This was done straight. As if it was totally normal for a radio station in ANY market size to be giving away $5 at a fastfood restaurant. When Mancow called the Grand Prize winner of the dinner for two, he added that he's already called ahead and checked and the Burger King was only a block from their hotel and literally across the street from Madison Square Garden, so they shouldn't have any trouble getting in, eating and getting over to their seats for the Janet Jackson concert.
That was the hook with all four weeks of contesting. The dinner was to be enjoyed before attending a concert in some cool far-off locale. You didn't know the payoff until he called the winner every Monday.
