On A Non-AFD, Hit-Driving Note
Mondo and mega congrats to 97.1 ZHT in Salt Lake City where they awarded an at-school appearance to the school with the most on-line anti-bullying pledges. http://www.971zht.com/pages/mirandacosgrove
April Fools Recaps
I was worried. A lot of hemming and hawing (c) but at the last minute, quite a few people got their act together and did what Radio is supposed to be able to do; have some fun and be entertaining. Again, if Taco Bell can buy the Liberty Bell and Sports Illustrated can do a story on Sidd Finch a rookie who could hurl 168 mph, then Radio should be able to do stupid (expletive) stuff too.
Mariah's In Labor This might arguably be one of the biggest of all time. Nick Cannon bolted from the studio this morning at 8:15 am when Mariah called to say she was in labor. This was shortly before Perez did his live thing at 8:30. Consequently...BING...it went worldwide. Nick returned at 10 revealed the prank. Perez was not amused.
Boise: The New Home For Adult Films Mix 106 which has lost the 1, lost Santa and ambushed a man with a vasectomy, ran spots recruiting talent for an adult film being shot in town. The phone line in the spot was barraged with people wanting the gig and equally outraged citizenry.
We're Taking Over A Station!! Not. Since Monday Power 96 in Miami has been slowly sending hints that something big was coming. Little "It's coming" drops between songs. Yesterday the jocks disappeared and a message from the GM began to run talking about how the station was changing and the new station was needed and would beat any other station in town and to be listening at 8:15 am this morning. Gas giveaway. The phones and buzz went nuclear when the jocks disappeared and the message began. Tom Callococci says that on-site it was nuts. News helicopters. Long lines of people honking and yelling "We love Power 96!" Photos at http://www.power96.com/index.php?page=1096
Very "Munich 1936" I have a radio spot that Blaine Fowler at WDVD in Detroit prepared for the city wide ban on birth control. The market's under-gone a HUGE loss in population so this was the municipal response. They also were requiring couples on the "Once A Month Plan" to escalate to weekly. They also ran a spot for littleink.com, which is a tattoo service for children. http://www.littleink.net/joke.htm
Cat, The Other White Meat So what happens when you appear as a restauranteur on a morning show to talk about your new franchise that serves meals prepared from cat? And you can "Pick Your Tail" from a pen and while you drink in the lounge it'll be killed and cooked and the kids sent home with souvenir feet? Well....people go crazy. As witnessed by Jamz in Albany and KSON in San Diego. With anything like this, you need a website. Gives it legitimacy. www.callahansoriginalfelinecuisine.com
What Happens In Vegas Some fun punking from Rock 102 in Fargo where co-host Ginger got arrested for swimming in the fountain at Caesars Palace. Great prank on her coworkers and the listeners. She was there on a bachelorette party and this went all Hangovery. Video of her swimming is here http://www.rock102online.com/rock-buzz-details.php?ID=581
Gas Gouging Newcap in Red Deer did a fake gas tax. The pay off will be a gas giveaway. But here is the OUTSTANDING website www.albertagastax.com
Her Parents Are Going To Kill Him Mike and Kiki from KOB-FM in Albuquerque teased the audience with THE exclusive interview with Selena to discuss her pregnancy by/with Justin. She was angry that it was getting out before she could talk with her folks and her manager but she also wanted to get control of the story. Turns out her full name was Selena Romez, she was 17 and she met Justin at a swap meet. But it's cool because he manager at Taco Loco was going to let her work through the 2nd tri.
Damn Big Brother This bit got grabbed up and done by a few of you. Pure genius from Paul Drake with Townsquare in Tri Cities: Say good bye to radar detectors...and shut off your cell phone...that is if you want to speed. Thanks to modern technology...if you drive with your smart phone on and speed - you could end up with a ticket tacked on to your cell phone bill. The new system, which goes in to effect June 1st - tracks your phone and the speed at which it travels. Authorities say $50 will be addedyou're your phone bill for every mile per hour over the limit. For more go on this story go to http://1027kord.com/smart-phone-could-earn-you-speeding-ticket.
The Office Of Deforestation From Nathan Bird at KLIX in Twin Falls: I'm pulling the County and City Park Defoliation (to save millions in watering and landscaping costs plus saving millions in medical care for the allergic low income families) complete with real listener callins I've gathered through the week and webpage linking to our VIP club to get points - but they'll click it thinking it goes to the city offices.
Your Tax Dollars At Work From Andy Ross at Wired in Saskatoon: instead of replacing an old, falling apart, but crucial bridge in downtown Saskatoon, they're bringing in a ferry to carry cars across the 100 or so yards. It will cost taxpayers a lot of money and the waits will be long. The funny thing is, there are 8 other bridges people can use....but we'll still be forced to pay for the ferry! The ferry company is the same one that built the ferries for the flawed and failed "Fast Ferry Program" for British Columbia in the late 90's.
Very "Stepford Baby-ish" From Tom Mitchell at 93Q in Syracuse: We did a fake spot (and adlibs, comments) about a genetic engineering service "AFD Genetic Specialists of Syracuse," offering designer babies for busy women whose biological clocks were ticking down. Got lots of calls. No actual babies were harmed or created. Hear the spot here: http://images.radcity...net/5869/4700351.mp3
Flying Cats Returned to Z-94.7 in Grand Forks. Beautifully staged as everyone in the market's eyes looked skyward to help track and return the errant cat that had drifted away while attached to helium balloons by Erick and Emily. And, yes, they got their TV coverage.
