How To Get Press In 2011
The days of sending out a press release and having it actually be successful, ended in about 1989.
In 2011 you get press by:
- Finding something that is ridiculously topical
- Putting a "visual" to it
- And sitting down with a six pack of beverages at night and hitting every web link you can find that is possibly applicable while you and your daughter watch "The Blues Brothers"
- You then Google, for instance, "Charlie Sheen news" and go to every news story and post your link in the comments
Which is why, if you Google "Wired 96.5 sheen" you'll find that it pretty much went global in about 18 seconds and continues to get linked, posted, re-linked, posted...and that's how you rise in the food chain. The Google robot searches, sifts and bumps you up the ladder.
But the key is having the visual. A visual of someone texting a code to the Red Cross is almost as exciting as watching a car rust. A visual of a morning show in a parking lot wrapping pallets of bottled water in banners and loading them on a truck, is something that pops on TV.
Oh, and "stunts don't work anymore" is crap. Which is why I love PPM. You can do something that everyone in the five state region is chattering about and a week later watch a huge spike in the numbers. You can also do what WRDW is and look at their web traffic and how is suddenly went "Kablooey" on March 3 at about 6 pm EST and see the same kind of numbers.
Here are a couple of the local links from Philly. The NBC one has an amazing series of shots of the plane and banner which I believe they ripped off from TMZ. It was also on KTLA the next morning out west, so who knows where they got it.

I have a master list of websites you should hit when you do stuff. Ask nicely and listen to my sales pitch at nwcpromo@earthlink.net And this is only the tip of the iceberg. Every one of these sites has about 20 friend sites you can hit.
So...oil just hit $106 a barrel. Your stunt and visual and press op for next week? Gas. Gascards = texting the Red Cross. Taking over a gas station = Charlie Sheen.
