Susan G. Komen
Many of you are involved with the walk in May. Cool. Greatest charity I can think of because it just seems to have some three-degrees connection with everyone.
American Airlines has put a pink ribbon with a Komen logo on one of their 757's. I've never seen a station do that to their van....hmmmmm.....
- Being in the walk is great. Being along the walk and handing out pink lemonade is also good.
- Template all the roads with your logo and pink spraychalk.
- Q-102 in Cincy has been way ahead of the breast cancer curve, for years. Their annual Bosom Ball is as close to being a local tradition as you can get and it's raised over a million dollars for the cause
- Dying some of the local fountains pink on Saturday night will look great on TV
Interns
WIOG in Saginaw has the best intern program in Radio. Period. End of story. Why? Because their Promo Director, Rachel Geddes, starts combing the schools in January. Why? Because she knows that all the good candidates will have commitments by April and you'll be left with a pool of slacker dregs to choose from.
The days of just beating off candidates (shut up) are over. Running a spot? Eh. You need to go out and work the schools. That's the only way to do it.
Also, fans of the station? Cool! Groupies? WAY more hassle then they're worth.
"We Have This Client...."
I'll occasionally get one of those calls. Client or event. They have money to spend. They're willing to pay but want something that will get people lined up.
Radio can learn from The Auto Show. Or the RV Show. Or any of those "shows" that pack a civic center for a weekend. Because they always have a celebrity a day. "Come out to The World Of Wheels this Saturday from noon to three and meet Randy Jackson who you may know as Joe the Policeman from the 'What's Going Down?' episode of 'That's My Mama'."
If they want a line, the way to do it is to bring someone in. And it's possible to overthink it; auto show in St. Paul last year had Brenda Song. Right. She played "London" on the "Suite Life Of Zach And Cody." Lines were out the door, down the elevator and into the lobby.
